Field trips set aside for homeschoolers
Homeschool days: what they are and how to find one near you
A homeschool day is a date when a museum, zoo, farm, garden, park, or historic site sets aside admission or programming specifically for homeschooling families. Some are a discounted visit you explore on your own. Most of the ones we checked add something staff-led: a class, a workshop, a guided tour, or hands-on activity stations.
Check the venue’s own page before you go. When we opened the official pages of 22 venues listed in our directory, four had gone stale: two returned errors, one showed only a past event, and one no longer described a homeschool program. Every date, price, and rule below comes from a venue page and will change.
Homeschool days at a glance
- What does it cost?
- It varies widely. Among 14 current programs we checked, listed prices ran from a $5 reservation fee at Texas Discovery Gardens to $40 for a drop-off class at Turtle Back Zoo that does not include zoo admission. Some are free, such as the National Park Service’s spring and fall homeschool day at Blackstone River Valley.
- Do I need to register?
- Usually. Eight of the 14 required or clearly expected advance registration or ticket purchase. Three were walk-up or first come, first served.
- Do I need proof that we homeschool?
- Rarely, in our check. Only Ramseyer Farms in Ohio asked for documentation, such as a superintendent’s acknowledgment letter or homeschool association membership.
- Who is it for?
- Age ranges are set by each venue: ages 4 and up at Anderson Farms, kindergarten through fifth grade at Sunriver Nature Center, ages 6 to 12 for Turtle Back Zoo’s drop-off classes, and K–12 at the Space Foundation Discovery Center.
- When are they?
- Museums and nature centers often run monthly through the school year. All three farm programs we checked ran only in September and October.
People also say “a homeschool day” to mean an ordinary day of learning at home. This guide is about the event. For daily routines, see our flexible homeschool schedule examples.
The label hides the format
Four kinds of homeschool day
“Homeschool day” tells you who the date is for. It does not tell you what you are paying for, whether you stay with your child, or whether a younger sibling can join. Work out which of these you are booking.
-
A discounted visit
You explore on your own at a homeschool rate. Thistleberry Farm in South Bend, Indiana, charges $9.95 per child and $6 per adult with no reservation. The Kansas City Zoo pairs discounted tickets with animal chats on its spring and fall dates.
-
A program day
Staff lead stations, workshops, or a guided tour, and you usually have time to explore afterward. Franklin Park Conservatory runs educator-led learning stations. Upcountry History Museum combines a guided gallery visit, classroom activities, and all-day admission. This was the most common format in our check.
-
A drop-off class
Your child attends a class without you. Turtle Back Zoo’s homeschool classes are drop-off sessions for ages 6 to 12, capped at 20 students, at $40 per session. The Maryland Homeschool Days list warns that parents usually cannot stay in the class at its drop-off sites.
-
A seasonal farm day
Hayrides, corn mazes, and pumpkins, often with short educational stops. Anderson Farms in Colorado and Ramseyer Farms in Ohio both run fall homeschool days. If a farm day is on your list, October is usually the month to go.

This is a small sample from one directory, not a national survey. Prices are as each venue listed them; some apply per person and some per child. Where a cell says “Not listed,” the venue page did not say.
From HomeTrail’s resource directory
Which places host homeschool days?
Among the listings in our directory named as homeschool days, museums lead. Of 60 unique venues, 28 are museums: 14 history museums or historic sites and 14 science, natural history, or children’s museums. Zoos, aquariums, and animal parks account for 4 of those named listings. If your search starts and ends with the zoo, look at the history museum across town too.
How we counted: we pulled every published listing in HomeTrail’s directory with “homeschool day” or “homeschool days” in its name: 65 listings. We removed three duplicates and two regional roundup pages, which left 60 venues, one of them in Canada. Many venues, especially zoos and aquariums, list homeschool days under another name, such as “homeschool programs,” and are not counted here. The mix reflects what families and our team have added to the directory, not every venue in the country.

Five places to look
How to find homeschool days near you
-
Start with places your children already love.
Search the venue’s website for “homeschool” and check its education, school groups, and events pages. Program pages are sometimes filed under school groups or field trips.
-
Check your state homeschool organization’s calendar.
The Home Educators Association of Virginia keeps a running list of Virginia homeschool days. MDHSA’s Maryland Homeschool Days page names 47 organizations, though it was last updated in March 2022, so confirm each one.
-
Browse HomeTrail’s directory.
The listings below link to the homeschool-day venues in our directory. For other museums, farms, and parks, browse local educational experiences, and for regular classes, see homeschool programs near you.
-
Ask your co-op or local group.
Someone may already be organizing a group date. Our homeschool co-op directory is organized by state and city.
-
Look at public lands.
The National Park Service’s Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park holds a free homeschool day each spring and fall and requires pre-registration for its programs. State parks run them too; Chimney Rock State Park is in our directory.
If a place you love has no homeschool day, ask its education office whether homeschool families can book a school-group rate or a private program. The answer costs one email.
Ask before you pay
Before you book: seven questions
Which kind is it?
A discounted visit, program day, drop-off class, or farm day. That decides most of the other answers.
Do I stay?
York County History Center asks parents to stay. Turtle Back Zoo’s classes are drop-off. Plan siblings and your own day around the answer.
What ages and siblings?
Programs are often grouped by age, and a toddler may need supervision outside the class area.
What is included?
At Turtle Back Zoo, the $40 class fee does not include zoo admission. At Port Discovery, $15 covers museum entry and one workshop.
How do I book, and can I get a refund?
Anderson Farms takes payment at reservation with no refunds and posts weather make-up dates. Ramseyer Farms sells tickets only at the door.
Do I need proof?
Ramseyer Farms asks for documentation, such as a superintendent’s acknowledgment letter or proof of homeschool association membership. Bring something just in case.
Is the venue open?
The Space Foundation Discovery Center is closed for renovation until a planned January 2027 reopening and is running programs offsite. Confirm the location before you drive.
The day is learning; keep a little of it
Record a homeschool day like any other learning day
Whether a homeschool day counts as a school day depends on your state’s rules, not on the venue. If you keep attendance, record the date like any other. If you keep a portfolio, save one small piece of evidence: a photo, a sketch, the program title, or your child’s two-sentence answer to “What surprised you?”
Attendance, Journey session logs, and portfolio reports, so the outing sits beside curriculum work. The free homeschool attendance tracker shows how a field trip day can be logged, and our guide to homeschool record keeping explains which records are worth keeping at all.
With TrailGuide in HomeTrail Plus, you can text what happened on the drive home, including the child, activity, date, and duration. Changes to family records usually show a confirmation for you to approve before they are saved.

Common questions about homeschool days
Are homeschool days free?
Some are. The National Park Service’s Blackstone River Valley homeschool day is free. Most charge something: among the 14 programs we checked, listed prices ran from a $5 reservation fee to $40 for a drop-off class. Compare the homeschool price with ordinary admission or a membership you already have.
Do I need to prove we homeschool?
Usually not, but some venues ask. One of the 14 programs we checked, Ramseyer Farms, required documentation such as a superintendent’s acknowledgment letter or homeschool association membership. Read the venue’s page or ask before you go.
Can younger siblings come?
Often, with limits. York County History Center welcomes younger and older siblings to its workshops. Turtle Back Zoo’s classes are only for ages 6 to 12. Check whether siblings pay, whether they can join the activity, and where they wait during a class.
Do homeschool days count as school days?
That depends on the rules where you live. You can record an educational outing the same way you record a day at the kitchen table. Check your state’s attendance and record requirements, then keep whatever evidence those rules call for.
How is a homeschool day different from a field trip?
A homeschool day is a field trip the venue designed for homeschool families: a set date, a homeschool price or program, and usually mixed ages. A field trip you plan yourself can happen on any day the venue is open, at ordinary admission.
