Supporter Feature: Grading in HomeTrail

HomeTrail is designed to support many different homeschooling styles, from relaxed, interest-led learning to structured academic planning. For families who want more formal tracking, HomeTrail offers an optional Grading feature as part of our Supporter tools.

Grading is not required to use HomeTrail, but it can be a helpful add-on for families with older students, transcript needs, or more traditional reporting goals.

What Is the Grading Feature?

The Grading feature allows you to assign grades to completed work and learning sessions inside HomeTrail.

With grading enabled, you can:

  • Record performance alongside completion

  • Track academic progress more formally

  • Build stronger documentation for middle school and high school

  • Support transcript-style reporting over time

Who Is Grading For?

Grading is especially useful for:

  • Middle school & high school students

  • Families preparing transcripts or credit tracking

  • Parents who want measurable academic records

  • Students completing independent coursework

  • Hybrid homeschool/private school models

If your homeschool is more project-based or informal, you may not need grading at all, and that’s perfectly okay.

What Can Be Graded?

Depending on your workflow, you can apply grades to:

  • Sessions or activities

  • Custom Curriculum completions

  • Assignments and projects

  • Subject-specific work over time

Grades become part of the student’s long-term learning record.

Where Grades Appear

Once grading is enabled, grades can show up in:

  • Student session history

  • Progress reporting views

  • Transcripts

This makes it easier to review both participation and performance in one place.

Why Is This a Supporter Feature?

HomeTrail’s core planning and tracking tools are free for everyone. Supporter features like grading help fund continued development while offering advanced options for families who need them.

Supporters help make HomeTrail better for the entire homeschool community.

How to Enable Grading

Grading can be turned on through your Supporter settings:

  1. Go to Supporter

  2. Click on Grading

  3. Set Grade Criteria

  4. Log grades when completing sessions

Once enabled, grading options will appear throughout relevant parts of the app.

Final Note

Grades are just one way to document learning, not the only way.

HomeTrail supports both:

  • Traditional academic tracking

  • Flexible, curiosity-driven homeschooling

Grading is simply an optional tool for families who want it.
