Creating and Listening to Podcasts with TrailGuide

TrailGuide can find existing podcast episodes for a student or create a short HomeTrail podcast from source material. A parent starts and reviews either workflow before the audio becomes available to the student in Nest.

Choose an existing episode

1. Ask TrailGuide for podcasts about a topic and name the student.
2. Review the numbered shortlist, including the episode and podcast names.
3. Reply with one or more numbers.
4. Review the Podcast Pick preview.
5. After approval, the student opens the card in Nest and chooses Listen.

For example:

Find Jordan a podcast about mountain lions in the Rocky Mountains, but skip anything sensational.

Send 2 to Jordan.

Create a HomeTrail podcast

Ask TrailGuide to create an original episode when you want a short explanation made for the student:

Use the articles we found to make Avery a short HomeTrail podcast about how mountain lions fit into the Rocky Mountain ecosystem.

TrailGuide can create one from:

• A topic or question
• A specific readable article
• Article research you reviewed with TrailGuide
• A recent Newsworthy or Deep Dive card for the same family

Choose Explainer for a warm educational episode or Meditation for a slower, calming episode. These currently available formats use one narrator. Host-and-guest, historical reenactment, and moderated debate formats are not enabled in the current release.

A HomeTrail podcast is normally about five minutes, includes three takeaways, and always provides a readable transcript. HomeTrail creates the expressive v3 audio on its servers; the child does not visit or operate the outside voice-generation service.

HomeTrail podcasts are private learning materials inside HomeTrail. Creating one does not publish it to a public podcast feed or submit it to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or another directory.

Listen and read the transcript

After the episode is ready:

1. Review the parent preview.
2. Approve it for Nest when you are ready.
3. In Nest, open the Podcast card and choose Listen.
4. Expand Read the transcript whenever reading along is helpful.

The generated audio and transcript are also available from the Podcast output in the HomeTrail mobile app. Playback uses temporary HomeTrail links rather than giving the child access to the voice-generation service.

Why an episode may not play

Existing podcast audio is controlled by its publisher. An episode may be unavailable when:

• The publisher removed or changed the audio file
• The audio host or a redirect does not pass HomeTrail's safety checks
• The server does not return a supported audio type
• The episode is not currently visible and approved for that student
• The temporary playback link expired

Nest plays eligible audio through HomeTrail instead of opening an outside podcast player. HomeTrail rechecks the student, family, card visibility, and audio source when playback begins. If an episode becomes unavailable, choose another result or ask TrailGuide to create a source-backed HomeTrail podcast instead.

Podcast research and generated HomeTrail podcasts require HomeTrail Plus. Student playback also requires enabled Nest access.
