Day 1
Inside Earth
Focus: Build a simple model of Earth’s crust, mantle, and core, then label the layers.
- Read the USGS introduction to volcanoes.
- Draw a cutaway Earth and use arrows to show where molten rock may move.
- Write one question you want the study to answer.

Day 2
Build an eruption model
Focus: Use a baking-soda model to observe gas, pressure, and flowing material. Be clear that its chemistry is different from magma.
- Build the model on a tray.
- Predict what will change when you vary one amount.
- Run two trials, measure the flow distance, and record the result.

Day 3
Map real volcanoes
Focus: Look for patterns instead of memorizing a list of famous volcanoes.
- Choose five volcanoes from the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program.
- Mark their approximate locations on a world map.
- Notice which sit near plate boundaries and write a cautious pattern statement.

Day 4
Shape and evidence
Focus: Compare volcano shapes and practice describing what an image actually shows.
- Compare a shield volcano with a steep-sided composite volcano.
- Sketch both profiles to the same baseline.
- Label observations separately from explanations.

Day 5
Teach it back
Focus: Turn the week into a clear explanation for someone else.
- Create a one-page field guide or three-minute talk.
- Include one diagram, one mapped example, and one model limitation.
- Finish the original question or name what you would investigate next.
